Whole Foods’ 5% Day supports Stewpot

On Monday, April 4th, Whole Foods Market in Jackson, Mississippi will donate 5% of their net profit to Stewpot Community Services. Whole Foods supports a different, local non-profit each month with 5% Day.

How can you help? Shop and eat at Whole Foods on Monday, April 4th and part of what you pay will go to Stewpot to help feed, shelter and clothe those in our city who cannot provide these things for themselves. If you have time, stop and visit with the Stewpot representative on site at Whole Foods between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. We’d be happy to answer any questions you have about Stewpot and our 17 ministries.

We are proud to have Whole Foods as a partner in ending homelessness and poverty in the Jackson area.

Sponsor Appreciation Party wets taste buds for main event

If the Taste of Mississippi Sponsor Appreciation Party is any indication, this year’s Taste of Mississippi is going to be one of the best. Sponsors and guests were excited to get a first glimpse of the signature art piece by Billy Solitario out of New Orleans and food samplings from last year’s restaurant winners left everyone ready for more.

This will be the 29th annual Blue Cross & Blue Shield Taste of Mississippi – a Benefit for Stewpot Community Services: Homegrown Hunger Relief, and will bring together dozens of Mississippi chefs and fine restaurateurs to share their culinary favorites on Monday, April 4th, 2016 at 7 p.m. at Highland Village.

The event is a Jackson-area favorite and has been named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. Taste of Mississippi is a night for party-goers and business men and women to mingle and network, sample some of Mississippi’s finest cuisine, purchase silent auction items and artwork, and dance the night away to live music!

Stewpot Clients Earn Success

“Willie had reached rock bottom,” remembers Brumfield Program Director Wilbert Logan. It all starts with the decision to make a change. Drowning in addiction to alcohol and drugs, Willie H. began a journey spanning more than three years. Without a job, money or insurance, and at step one of a 12-step-program, he was determined to change his life. In need of physical, emotional and spiritual healing, he crossed the threshold of the Billy Brumfield Shelter, Stewpot’s emergency shelter for men. He entered the Brumfield House Program on January 21, 2012.

“I sent him to see our Stewpot counselor to get started on his many personal issues.’ recalls Logan. “After a few visits with her, Willie began to work on his sobriety.”

Logan also referred Willie to Hinds Behavioral Health where short-term goals were set. The high school dropout enrolled himself into a G.E.D. program at Hinds Community College. He, also, sought after and received his disability, helping him with health issues.

Willie, now 35, lives in his own apartment enjoying freedom from addiction. On April 1, 2015 he completed the Brumfield Shelter Program. “Willie stated he will never drink or do drugs again,” says Logan, “expressing his gratitude to us for encouraging him to finish his goals.”

Stewpot ministries touch lives every day, whether it’s a meal or helping someone renew their life. Short-term goals turn into lifelong changes, transforming turmoil and struggle into success. Clients, arriving at Stewpot shelters though different paths, find help, support and encouragement. It is these men and women, through hard work and determination, who ultimately choose the path to independence and success. Life, with it’s challenges, continues with new skills to face a future, still uncertain, but much brighter.
