Hollywood, Where You Can Bean a Star!
Are you ready for a battle for the coveted title of best beans in town?! We’re preparing for 25-30 teams to compete in this year’s Red Beans and Rice Celebration! Scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Mississippi Braves Stadium, this fantastic annual favorite supports the 17 ministries of Stewpot’s simple mission; to nurture and provide in a safe, loving environment for metro area homeless and needy.
This year’s theme is “Hollywood, Where you can Bean a Star”. Judges will award prizes not only for the best beans, but also for the most creatively decorated booths, while the Peoples’ Choice award will be decided by the voting attendants. Also, we are bringing back the Halloween Costume contest this year. Children are encouraged to sport their best Halloween frock to walk away with a cash prize! There will be plenty of candy for our trick-or-treaters. And, the Hula Hoop contest will be back in full effect. This contest is for the young and the young at heart.
As a long-standing tradition, dozens of congregations, professionals, and individuals vie for the coveted title of the Best Red Beans & Rice in town, and over a thousand people from around the metro area turn out to sample the competitors’ beans, listen to the bands and enjoy the festivities. The celebration includes kid-friendly activities such as face painting, balloon art, an exotic animal presentation, and space jumps. College football fans can even take in televised games on the park’s giant outfield screen. And yes, for you who want to get a jump start on your Christmas gifts, we are bringing back the craft vendors and their homemade wares.
The festival provides a great way for businesses, neighbors and even congregations to enjoy an afternoon of fellowship while supporting a great cause. Stewpot is a 33 year-old interfaith agency that provides assistance at no charge to 650 individuals and families, a day, who are in need of food, shelter, clothing, love and encouragement.
Hosting the event at the park provides a rain-or-shine venue for food, kid’s activities, music and all of the other fun and festivities. “The Mississippi Braves Stadium is a great festival venue and an awesome way to attract metro-area supporters,” said Frank Spencer, executive director of Stewpot Community Services.
In 2013, Stewpot served more than 160,000 meals in its Jackson Stewpot Kitchen and its Meals on Wheels program, or through one of the four Stewpot shelters. More than 1,200 families and individuals were provided safe overnight shelter, and more than 6,000 were provided emergency grocery supplies through the Stewpot Food Pantry.
Tickets are $15 at the gate or $10 in advance, children 6-10 are $5, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at any Trustmark Branch, Mississippi Braves Stadium, Stewpot, McDade’s Markets, Lemuria Bookstore, and some of your local churches.
